Random Team Generator — Split Names into Groups

Paste a list of names, choose how many teams or how many people per team, and get fair random groups in one click.

Useful for captains or your strongest players.

How to make random teams

  1. Paste or type the names, one per line (a column copied from a spreadsheet works).
  2. Choose whether you want a fixed number of teams or a fixed team size.
  3. Click Generate teams. Not happy? Click again for a new random split.
  4. Click Copy teams to paste the result into a chat, email or slide.

How the teams are made fair

The list is shuffled with a cryptographically secure random generator (a Fisher–Yates shuffle, which gives every possible order the same chance). Names are then dealt to the teams in turn, like dealing cards, so team sizes never differ by more than one. If you tick the "put the first names on different teams" option, those names — for example team captains or your most experienced players — are dealt first, one per team, and only the rest are shuffled. That keeps strong players apart without anyone choosing teams by hand.

Where a team generator helps

Need to choose one person rather than split everyone? Use the random name picker. To decide which team goes first, flip a coin or roll a die.

Frequently asked questions

Are the teams balanced in size?

Yes. Names are shuffled and then dealt out one at a time like cards, so team sizes never differ by more than one person.

What if the names don’t divide evenly?

Some teams get one extra member. For example, 23 people in 4 teams gives three teams of 6 and one team of 5.

Can I make teams by size instead of number?

Yes. Choose "People per team" and enter the size you want — the generator works out how many teams are needed.

Can I balance teams by skill?

Put your strongest players first in the list and tick "Put the first names on different teams". They will be placed on different teams before the rest are shuffled in.

Is my list saved?

Your names are kept in your own browser for next time. Nothing is uploaded.
